Fan des Stones, je l’ai découverte à neuf ans en sachant juste qu’elle avait interprété As Tears Go By et qu’elle était une ancienne petite amie du grand Mick. Puis vint Broken English, une grande claque, juste avant Dangerous Acquaintances où je tombais amoureux de cette fille aux cheveux mouillés et lèvres généreuses. Merci les pochettes de 30 centimètres, ce n’est pas avec un CD ou un MP3 que j’aurais fantasmé autant. Mais ça, c’était en 1979. En 2009, Mamie Marianne Faithfull l’aristocrate groupie, junkie et star traine encore sa voix éraillée sur les chansons des uns et des autres. Et lorsque j’apprends qu’elle reprend Morrissey, mon coeur fait un bond, mes genoux tremblent. Dear God, Please Help Me, implore-t-elle et mes yeux s’embrument. Faut-il se faire arrêter par la police avec un Mars dans le vagin et un Mick Jagger au bout pour m’émouvoir autant ? Je l’ignore, mais comme le dit si bien la chanson : The Heart Is Free.

Then came Broken English, a masterpiece, and Dangerous Acquaintances on which I fell in love with the wet hair girl on the sleeve. 12 inches of her lovely face… couldn’t happen with a bloody CD or a MP3, aye? But that was 1979. In 2009, Granny Marianne Faithfull is still not a was and keeps laying her broken voice on other people’s tunes. My heart skips a beat when I hear about her covering Morrissey, my knees started shaking. Dear God Please Help Me, she croons and tears come to my eyes. Does one have to get arrested with a Mars bar in the fanny and Mick Jagger at the tip of it to move me that much? I don’t know, but as the song says: The Heart Is Free.
